ABOUT THINGMADE

THINGMADE is a boutique conglomerate powered by Madwell, a Brooklyn-based creative agency.

Madwell earns its keep quarrying and polishing ideas. Extracting the right idea at the right time comes with a byproduct, though: the right idea at the wrong time. Instead of allowing that creative spill to drift back into the ether, we built it an engine.

Fueled by creative surplus, THINGMADE is founded not on a mandate of “why,” but on a mandate of “why not.” It moves freely between lifestyle, art, and function, responding to ideas with the quickness of a small shop and the ambitious scale of a multinational conglomerate—without the teensy-tiny worldview of the one or the uninspired bloat of the other.

In the end, every THINGMADE thing is weighed for its aesthetic and utilitarian merit, and created to be accessible to the people.

And the byproduct of the byproduct, we flush.

PROCESS

  1. IDENTIFY THING.

Identify, isolate, and extract a thing from the pool of all possible things.

  2. MAKE THING.

Define, refine, and precision-shape the thing by machine or by hand.

  3. USE THING.

Use the thing indefinitely for so long as you both shall live.

Accessories

Unlike most accessories (which are generally considered optional or disposable), THINGMADE Accessories are collectibles to be passed on from generation to generation, thrift shop to thrift shop, and ritual burial site to ritual burial site until the end of all time and space.

Apparel

Outerwear. Innerwear. Shirts. Shorts. Chinos. Perfect for men, women, children, babies, and animals. THINGMADE Apparel doesn't simply cover all your necessary bits: it covers them in fabric.

Electronics

THINGMADE Electronics are semi-complex art pieces that move, illuminate, or noisemake. While nice enough on their own, we do recommend plugging them in for full enjoyment.

Kareware

Susan Kare pushed the Graphic User Interface beyond lines of green unicode on a black screen into the world of the pixel. Now, in collaboration with Kare, THINGMADE's Kareware Department takes the pixel places it's always wanted to go.

Kitchen

Whether it's a bronze banana tree or a one-of-a-kind spatula, every THINGMADE Kitchen item is carefully crafted to better address a culinary need you didn't know you had—and to make you better looking in the process.

Object

THINGMADE Objects are the clever, heavy things you put on tables and shelves for people to admire at parties. You know: paperweights, music boxes, garden gnomes—that sort of thing.

Print

THINGMADE Print includes prints, printed items, or items that have themselves been printed on, including (but not limited to) ink, silkscreen, or laser-treated paper, fabric, wood, metallics, stone, found objects, and food. Please note that THINGMADE Print excludes skin and skywriting at this time.

Thingmade X Susan Kare

Susan Kare is the mother of pixel art. She began her career designing digital fonts and user interface graphics for the original Macintosh computer, and today, her original icons are considered modern classics. Our collaboration sparked the Kareware by THINGMADE collection.

About Madwell

THINGMADE is a boutique corporation fueled by the bodily salts of Madwell, a Bushwick, Brooklyn-based creative agency. When we're not working on paid public art for brands we love, we enjoy lunch, long walks on the sidewalk, and together-time with our office cat.
